1st Lt. Romain Lorenzo Hollis was born March 27, 1913 in Tacoma, Washington to Fred Hollis and Amelia Munoz Hollis. He was the oldest boy of 5 children. He was raised by his mother, as his father died in 1920. After high school, he worked for his Uncle as a butcher in the family meat market.

Romain married Kathryn Musser in March of 1937. They had one daughter, Judith Keigh Hollis, born December 14, 1941.

He joined the Washington National Guard in 1931, headquartered at Camp Murray in Tacoma, WA. He was with the 803rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was a member of the Calvary and was an expert horseman. He won many awards for his participation in shows.

He was called to active duty in the early part of 1941. He was stationed at Camp Hood in Texas and from there went to Georgia, He departed for Europe in May of 1941 on the USS New Amsterdam. He had the ultimate command of Company B of the 630th Tan Destroyer Battalion. His unit was the first to cross the Siegfried line into Germany. He served with Patton’s Army.

On September 13, 1941, he was wounded by enemy shrapnel and taken to a field hospital. He died on September 15, 1941 and is buried in Henri-Chapelle American Military Cemetery in Hombourg, Belgium.
